The Numbers

As Britain becomes progressively more multicultural the Asian food sector continues to expand. According to the Office for National Statistics in 2009, there were 9.1 million ethnic residents living in England and Wales.

A Mintel survey on ethnic food consumption shows that over half of adult Britons enjoy eating Asian foods regularly. And between 2007 and 2012 the UK ethnic foods market recorded a 28% increase in sales, reaching a staggering £1.4 billion per annum. A breakdown of the ethnic food retail sector shows that in 2012 Indian foods were the market leader with estimated revenue of £693 million. Chinese foods came in second with estimated income of £413 million.

The ethnic ready meals sector showed overall growth in excess of 9%, equivalent to sales of £821 million in the period 2011-2012. Over two fifths of ethnic food consumers in the UK are continually on the lookout for new foods varieties, sauces, spices and flavours.

This increase in sales reflects an ever growing interest
